Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick

Kwame Kilpatrick’s mother, Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick, had served in the Michigan state legislature for nearly two decades when she decided to run for the U.S. House of Representatives in 1996. At the age of 26, Kwame decided to run for her seat in the state house. At the time, she warned Kwame that elected office is a lonely job.

Carolyn appears in Episode 10.

So as a mother — I wore my mother hat, not my political hat — I was concerned. It’s a lonely job.
